From Manchester Fish Market to Modern Seafood Partner
Founded in 1862 by Joseph Sykes at Old Smithfield Market in Manchester, the business was established during a period of significant change in the UK’s food supply chain.
As Britain’s rail network expanded and access to ice improved, Sykes helped bring fresh seafood beyond coastal communities, making quality fish more accessible to customers inland. Through dependable service, product knowledge and strong customer relationships, the business built a reputation that would endure for generations.
While the seafood industry has changed dramatically since then, the principles that shaped the company remain the same today: quality, reliability and a long-term commitment to customers.
From Local Trade to Global Seafood Capability
1862 – Founded in Manchester
Sykes Seafood was founded by Joseph Sykes at Old Smithfield Market in Manchester. The business began by supplying fresh fish at a time when seafood availability away from coastal ports was still limited. With the development of Britain’s rail network and improved access to ice, Sykes was able to store and distribute fresh fish effectively and established a dependable seafood supply route into Manchester and the surrounding region.
1970s - Expanding with the Industry
The move to New Smithfield Market in the 1970s marked an important step in the company's growth, creating opportunities to expand operations and strengthen its position within the UK seafood sector.
By the 1980s, Sykes had expanded into frozen seafood, supplying customers throughout the UK with mixed and full pallet deliveries. This broadened the business beyond traditional fish market trading and helped establish Sykes as a national seafood supplier.
1980s - Investing in Processing and Packing
As customer requirements became more sophisticated, Sykes invested in UK processing and packing capabilities. The introduction of cold water prawn packing and later warm water prawn processing provided greater control over specifications, quality and consistency.
This investment laid the foundations for the integrated supply chain approach that continues to define Sykes Seafood today.
2020 - Strengthening Our Global Reach
In 2020, Sykes Seafood became part of the Klaas Puul Group, further strengthening our international sourcing network, processing expertise and seafood capabilities.
The partnership enhanced our ability to source seafood responsibly from around the world while maintaining the local service, flexibility and responsiveness our customers value.
