Sustainable Packaging & Circularity

Our focus is on supporting a more efficient and circular food supply chain. We do this by reducing material use, improving recyclability, limiting food waste and giving residual streams as much value as possible.

Packaging

Sykes Seafood works to reduce packaging material, improve recyclability and develop more circular packaging solutions across our product portfolio. What we have achieved:

100% recyclable retail packaging for key customers

Supporting more circular packaging solutions while maintaining product protection, food safety and strong shelf presentation.

Increased use of mono-materials, such as PET

Simplifying material structures to improve recyclability and support more efficient end-of-life processing.

FSC-certified cartons and labels

Using responsibly sourced, certified fibre-based materials for selected cartons and labels across our packaging portfolio.

Continuous improvement

Smarter design

Reduced material use through optimised packaging design.

Circular packaging

Fully recyclable frozen packaging solutions where technically and commercially practical.

Fewer layers

Eliminating unnecessary packaging layers while maintaining product protection, food safety and shelf-life performance.

What follows

We continue to review packaging materials, formats and systems to identify opportunities for further improvement. Our focus is on solutions that protect product quality, support food safety and reduce environmental impact in practical, measurable ways.

Exploration of biobased and compostable packaging

Assessing alternative material solutions that can reduce reliance on conventional plastics while meeting technical and food safety requirements.

Wash-off labels and improved recyclability

Exploring label solutions designed to separate more easily during recycling and improve the recoverability of packaging materials.

Expansion of circular material systems

Increasing the use of packaging structures designed to support material recovery, reuse and more circular resource flows.

Reducing waste

We actively work to reduce food waste across the full value chain, from sourcing and processing to distribution and consumption.

Production efficiency

Minimising food waste in production through efficient planning and yield optimisation.

Maximising raw material use

Making the best possible use of products and raw materials.

Reducing supply chain losses

Reducing losses through better forecasting, cold chain management and close collaboration with customers.

Supporting responsible consumption

Supporting responsible consumption through clear product information, shelf-life optimisation and appropriate portion sizes.

From residual stream to value

We also work to ensure that unavoidable by-products are used responsibly. By combining waste reduction with circular valorisation, we contribute to a more efficient and resilient food system, where valuable raw materials are retained and used more effectively. Examples include:

Reuse

Reuse of prawn by-products, such as shells and heads, for applications including animal feed or biobased energy.

Alternative fuel

Mixed residual waste can be processed into alternative fuel for the cement industry. This helps reduce emissions from the incineration of high-calorific waste and contributes to circular material use and lower reliance on fossil fuels in energy-intensive sectors.

Circular opportunities

Exploring new opportunities for valorisation within circular supply chains.
